Southern Baked Candied Yams
Ingredients
- 7 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- Ingredients Needed
- Half a teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 - 1/2 tsp teaspoon ground allspice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 4 pounds sweet potatoes peeled, washed, cut into pieces
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- Half a teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F
- Using low-medium heat add butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar to deep skillet.
- Quickly stir to combine the butter and sugar.
- Add nutmeg, ground cinnamon, allspice, ground ginger and pure vanilla extract.
- Continue stirring to incorporate all ingredients.
- Allow candied mixture to come to a slow simmer, before turning the stove top off.
- Remove candied yam mixture and pour onto yams (sweet potatoes).
- Cover with aluminum foil.
- Place into preheated 350°F oven and allow to bake for about 35 -40 minutes on each side.
- Uncover and rotate yams to allow even baking and candied syrup distribution.
- After a total of about 1 hour to 1hour 20 minutes.
- Be sure to check on yams to test desired tenderness.
